The Platelet-Rich Plasma Technique is one in which the natural healing factors found in your blood are used to enhance the healing after your surgery. Platelets are the little elements of your blood that first stop the bleeding when it happens (whether you cut yourself accidentally or undergo surgery for some reason!) and then call every other healing elements to come in and help. That faculty of forming a clot, then starting and encouraging the healing process is what we are using.
Obtaining the blood sample is straightforward, since the technique is mostly used during more involved surgeries that necessitate an IV access for sedation in the first place. Special equipment and processing are then needed to isolate and concentrate the platelets that are rich in healing factors.
Interestingly, two useful elements are being created: the platelet-rich plasma fraction is used to enhance the healing of the bone graft and overlying soft tissue (a fast healing of the surgical incision is often as important for the overall success as anything happening in the bone graft itself), while the platelet-poor fraction can be used to create a natural autogenous ("from self") membrane used to cover the graft site prior to soft tissue closure.
This self-healing enhancement technique has been applied to multiple surgical fields other than oral and maxillofacial surgery, including orthopedics and plastic surgery.
